Folsom Street Fair is Tomorrow
September 26th, 2009 Posted in Uncategorized
San Francisco’s annual Folsom Street Fair is tomorrow. It’s a great place to shoot. The photo above is from last year. Starts at 11am and runs until 6pm. It’s held on Folsom Street, between 7th and 12th, with activities on the side streets as well. Best to go early, because by mid-afternoon it’s a zoo with tons of people. Bring a flash for fill because the mid-day light is super-harsh…

Do you usually use a flash? What has been your experience with flash for street?
Thanks for the date, and time details…wish I could attend that…will tweet though.
Have a good one.

Hey Luis…
I usually bring a flash for fill when shooting mid-day events; such as Bay to Breakers, Carnival, Pride, etc…
Mid-day non-overcast San Francisco light is so harsh, that using fill-flash is really the only solution. For random shooting on the street, no. But I have used the pop-up flash when needed – but there’s an understanding with the subject of some sort I’m taking a picture. For street portraits when I engage a subject, I try and find a suitable background with non-direct light.
Far different than how Bruce Gilden in NYC uses his flash – that’s gutsy…
