On Polk

The photo above of Carla Susan (see the 3/17 comment below) and Stan is one that I keep going back and forth on as to whether it should stay in color, or rendered to black and white. Usually I favor B&W, but in this particular portrait I’m liking the way the colors in Carla’s face and glasses work with Stan’s shirt.

This was taken two weekends ago during the Wandering in the Company of Strangers workshop that I blogged about earlier. Was great shooting with a couple of other workshop photographers (Susan and Rikki) as we went through the City…

Edit 2/5/10: Here’s the black and white version.  And I’m liking it better now – her expression feels much more intense…

I really like it in color! quite some characters you’ve found there. very good portrait!

Both are great. For me it comes down to the mood or feeling you want to convey. The color one is more natural, more human bringing home the message you know them than just a pair of folk you run into now and then on the streets. The BW is striking in the way it focuses on their seemingly peculiar personalities. Color, intimate; black and white, distance.

I prefer color. Her glasses, hair, and skin tones all go so nicely together, and the orange shirt against the blue of her jacket and tree in the background adds zing.

i find myself looking at the shirt and glasses in the color picture. however the b&w brings your attention right to the subjects faces. both are great

I would just like to say Nice pic! This lady (carla is not her name by the way) Susan is my mother. It is extremely rare that she lets ANYONE take her pic and I feel that you captured her inner self quite nicely. Also I prefer the b&w way more than the color. So thanks for taking one of the best pics of my mothers life I will treasure it forever!

Thank you Jen! I’m really happy that you like it. I’ve made the correction to your mother’s name. I took a lot of portraits that day and I must have gotten out of sync with my notes. Curious, how did you come about finding her in my blog?

Email me your address and I’ll be glad to send you a couple prints in the mail.
