Alcatraz

One of the places in the SF Bay Area I can’t seem to get enough of is Alcatraz. I’ve done two overnight stays there (via PhotoAlliance) plus a bunch of day trips. The overnight trips are great because you get access to the whole island and all parts of the prison; including areas that are off-limits to people on the day tours. Plus, you get your own cell to sleep in – but no mint on your pillow…  Since there’s so much to shoot, sleeping is not a wise use of limited time.

The only problem with the day trips is tourists – thousands of them and they’re everywhere. Makes it really tough to get clean shots… One way of minimizing that is to take the first boat over in the early morning and quickly get up the hill to shoot. By Noon, there’s just way too many people.

In the Summer the Park Service offers a limited number of night tours giving you access to parts of the prison that are not available to people on the day tours.

I’ll post more Alcatraz pix here from time to time…

Here’s a short video presentation I put together last year.
